Vak - The Secret of Mantras

Updated: Nov 7, 2020

Theory of Speech

Vak (speech) is of FOUR major types: 1. Para vak (supreme soundless sound of consciousness) is life of other THREE.

In animal kingdom man encounters only following THREE

2. Pashyanti ( without differentiation - nirvikalpa ) 3. Madhyama ( where u reside in thought ) 4. Vaikhari ( gross sound- speech )

In sambhava state (universal I-ness/ Purnahata), YOU are in ParaVak (Supreme "soundless" speech) with ability to travel from Supreme to subtlest to subtle to gross without varying consciousness.

Man's purpose is to travel from Pasyanti to Madhyama to Vaikhari.

Para isn't available.

PasyantiVak

It is 1st flow of perception of object you are watching without differentiating/ recognizing it with known label. In Shaivism this state of experiencing/observing is Shikharastha jnana. From hilltop you observe everything without resolution into small individualities/ labels

This perception is without any thought. This is subtlest speech. It's experience of baby.

MadhyamaVak (Subtle speech)

It is state of mind where you reside in thought only & that thought is without sentence/ words/ alphabets.

Last is VaikhariVak (Gross speech) which is ordinary speech.

All these 3 Vak are further subdivided into Sthula (Gross), Suksma (Subtle) & Para (Subtlest). So we have 9 subdivsions: Gross, Subtle & Subtlest Pasyanti Gross, Subtle & Subtlest Madhyama Gross, Subtle & Subtlest Vaikhari

Sound of metal-string like Sitara is Gross-Pasyanti. If you concentrate on that sound then you should enter Samadhi. In fact as per Shaivism, if you cannot get Samadhi by this then you are unable to meditate. Since though, it's Gross sound but it's still Pasyanti!

Sound of Drum is Gross-Madhyama. Concentration on this is also helpful. Sound from mouth is Gross-Vaikhari Here, no concentration is possible. Only person in Sambhava state can enter Samadhi through ordinary talk/ speech.

"Inclination to think a thought" is Subtle-Vak If inclination is to play Sitara then it's Subtle-Pasyanti. If inclination is to play a drum then it's Subtle-Madhyama. If inclination is to ordinary talk then it's Subtle-Vaikhari
When there's only arising of a sensation of the thought "arising" of inclination to think a thought then it's Subtlest-Vak. If arising of sensation to think "I'll play Sitara" then it's Subtlest-Pasyanti If arising of sensation to think "I'll play Drum" then it's Subtlest-Madhyama

For who's in Sambhava state, there's no restriction in travelling between all Vak states. Yet He remains in Samadhi.

Sakta aspirant who has gained Supreme I-ness state through Saktopaya, for them there are only 2 Vak state possible-Subtle & Subtlest. In Gross-Vak, they will be scattered.

For rest of aspirants who are in Anavopaya can only utilize Gross-Vak as they have no experience of Subtle & Subtlest Vak. They need to practice Gross-Vak 1st then move to Saktopaya. Mantras carry path to travel from Gross-vaikhari to Subtlest-Pashyanti by practicing Guru Mantra.
