Śrī Saubhāgya Lakṣmī Vidyā
Saubhāgya Lakṣmī Vidyā

Śrī Saubhāgya Lakṣmī Vidyā is the Vidyā of Śrī Lakṣmī Herself. In this tradition, Lakṣmī is not approached merely as a bestower of prosperity, but as the primordial Śakti who is the very ground of existence. Her mūla-svarūpa is expressed as Aṣṭa-Lakṣmī, yet Her essence remains singular and undivided.

The primordial name of Śakti is Lakṣmī.

Vanadurgā is non-different from this very Lakṣmī.
Indeed, Lakṣmī—also known as Bhagavatī—is Herself Vanadurgā. This identity is revealed and illumined through Triveṇī-Vidyā, wherein the unity of Śrī, Bhū, and Nīlā is directly contemplated.

This understanding is affirmed in the Sītā Upaniṣad, which teaches that Sītā is the threefold Lakṣmī—Śrī, Bhū, and Nīlā—who, in accordance with Divine Will, assumes forms for the protection and sustenance of all worlds.

The Śakti-tattva of the Vedic and Āgamic traditions begins with one fundamental insight: the primordial name of Śakti is Lakṣmī. Before any specialization into forms such as Durgā, Ambikā, Lalitā, or Sarasvatī, the root Śakti is addressed as Lakṣmī, the luminous potency of the Supreme.

The Sītā Upaniṣad declares this root Śakti as:

sītā iti trivarṇātmā sākṣānmāyāmayī bhavet

Sītā (i.e., Lakṣmī) is inherently Trivarṇā—threefold—and She is Māyā itself.

This “Trivarṇā” nature is the foundational description of Divine Śakti.

The Upaniṣad says:

śrīr iti lakṣmīr iti lakṣyamāṇā bhavatīti

“She who is called Śrī is Lakṣmī, the one sought by all beings.”

Śrī is the icchā–śakti component of Śakti-tattva.

Śrī represents the subtle luminosity by which the formless Absolute reveals itself.

bhūdevī sasāgarāṃbhaḥ-saptadvīpā vasundharā… ādhārādheyā praṇavātmikā

“Bhū-devī is the Earth with oceans and continents, the support of the worlds, the essence of Om.”

Bhū is the kriyā-śakti in her grounding form:

Bhū is the cosmic base of operation for Divine activity.

nīlā ca mukhavidyunmālinī sarvauṣadhīnāṃ sarvaprāṇināṃ poṣaṇārtham

“Nīlā is radiant like lightning; She nourishes all plants and all beings.”

Nīlā is jñāna–śakti in dynamic form:

Nīlā represents the mysterious and fluid aspect of Śakti—the one that transforms, heals, and evolves.

The Upaniṣad further correlates Trivarṇā with the fundamental Śakti-triad:

icchāśaktistrividhā bhavati — śrī-bhū-nīlātmikā

“The Will-power becomes threefold as Śrī, Bhū, and Nīlā.”

The Upaniṣad states:

sītā mūlaprakṛtirucyate

“Sītā (Lakṣmī) is called the Root-Prakṛti.”

This means Lakṣmī is not merely the goddess of wealth;

She is the Primal Matrix—the undivided potency out of which the universe arises.

In Triveṇī-Vidyā, Lakṣmī is primarily invoked in this very svarūpa—as the unified Trivarṇā Śakti.

From Devī Bhāgavata Purāṇa:

triguṇā sā mahālakṣmīḥ sarvadevaśarīrajā |
aṣṭādaśabhujā ramyā trivarṇā viśvamohinī ||

Saubhāgya Lakṣmī as Kaivalya-Vidyā

The most profound revelation of the Saubhāgya-Lakṣmī Upaniṣad (Ṛgvedīyā) is that Lakṣmī is not presented merely as a goddess of fortune or material abundance. Rather, She is revealed as Saubhāgya Lakṣmī, the embodiment of Kaivalya-Vidyā—the knowledge that leads to non-dual liberation.

saubhāgyalakṣmī-kaivalya-vidyā-vedya-sukhākṛtiḥ

Saubhāgya Lakṣmī is the very form of bliss,
knowable only through liberating knowledge,
not through external acquisition.

Thus, Saubhāgya ≠ fortune alone.
Saubhāgya = abiding in the fullness of Brahman as Śrī.

When the Devas implore Nārāyaṇa to reveal the Saubhāgya Lakṣmī Vidyā, the Upaniṣad defines Her as:

  • turīya-rūpā — present even in the fourth state of consciousness

  • turīyātītā — transcending even Turīya

  • sarva-mantrāsana-gatā — seated upon all mantras

Here, Lakṣmī is not secondary to Viṣṇu, but Parā-Śakti—the very ground in which even Viṣṇu abides. Her later identification as Viṣṇu-patnī is symbolic of inseparability, not hierarchy.

The Upaniṣad further establishes Śrī Sūktam itself as the mantra-body of Saubhāgya Lakṣmī. It is upon this Saubhāgya Lakṣmī Vidyā that Śrī Vidyā is founded.

Therefore, seekers of Mā Vanadurgā necessarily pass through Śrī Vidyā, for the central mantra of Her worship—the Śrī Saubhāgya Lakṣmī Pañcadaśākṣarī Mahāmantra—is revealed within this very Saubhāgya Lakṣmī Vidyā, which is itself known as Śrī Vidyā.
